CSV files
CSV and TSV files open as a grid: each field padded to its column's
width, │ between the fields and the header row bold. The grid is
drawn over the text, so each field is edited where it stands, and the
delimiter (,, ;, a tab or |), the quoting, the line endings and a
byte order mark stay as the file has them. A spreadsheet in a Turkish
or other European locale writes ; between fields and , in numbers;
both are read.
Tab and Shift+Tab go from field to field (Tab past the last field adds
a row), Enter and the arrows from cell to cell as in a spreadsheet,
and Alt+Enter (Ctrl+J in a terminal) puts a line break into the cell.
With Vim's keys, j and k go to the same column of the row below
and above, and insert mode inserts into the cell. The commands of the
CSV category insert, delete and move rows and columns, and Sort
File by Column sorts the records by the column at the cursor (numbers
as numbers, the header first); every change is one undo step, and only
the fields that change are written, quoted only when they need it.
Copy as Tab-Separated Values copies the selected records (all of
them without a selection) as a spreadsheet pastes them, and rows
pasted from a spreadsheet get the file's delimiter. The status bar
shows the count, sum, average, smallest and largest of the numbers in
the cursor's column, and the header row stays at the top when the rows
scroll.
In the Table menu: Filter Rows asks for a text and shows only the
rows with a field holding it (case ignored), with the header and the
row at the cursor, and says how many match; Show All Rows shows them
all again. Sort View by Column shows the rows in the order of the
column at the cursor (again: descending) and File Order ends it;
neither changes the file. With a filter or a sorted view on, a
selection covers the rows shown, and the commands on it (Delete Row,
Fill Down, Delete, Copy, Paste) change only those. Open as Plain
Text shows the text as it is, and Convert to Org Table writes the
rows as an Org table in a new .org file beside it and opens it.
